4. High School Drama VS Youth Drama

There are two sub genres within the 'Teen' category: High school dramas and youth dramas.

High school dramas

High school dramas are typically filmed within a school setting, with female leads and a theme of romance. Normally with a comical tone and basic plot line, they appeal to teens who feel they can relate to the loose story line and entertaining comical edge.

Typical Structures of High School Drama Title Sequences

This usually consists of a large list of titles.Whilst the titles are being rolled there will usually be a socialisation of teenagers, celebrating the idea of being young in the background.  This may introduce the main focus of the film which is often ' female focused'.

Mean Girls

Mean Girls is a High School Drama , the title sequence supported the conventions of a High School Drama . This Consisted of a very large of producers and actors. With a simplistic typing, which utilised stereotypically 'feminine' colours. This title sequence establishes the storyline; it features a girl starting her first day at an American high school, therefore setting the movie as a 'high school drama.'

Structure:

  1. Owners
  2. Production
  3. Main actor
  4. Title
  5. Opening scene
  6. Other main actors x11
  7. Casting director
  8. Screen writer
  9. Music Supervisors
  10. Music composer
  11. Co-producers

Boys N The Hood

This was a youth drama . this Consisted a no mention of actors or directors simply the producers and owners . This consisted of a unique logo on a black background but thawed was a white outline not filled in .This subject behind the title was of a children aged about 9-10 exploring a murder scene this matter is rather serious and not something every one is exposed to in there life's.

Comparison

The youth drama seems to  be more serious, this would imply less humor a.The List  of producers  and actors is bigger for the Teen Movie as what happening behind isn't such serious ,and not vital to the plot as the plot is rather simple . However the Teen Drama has a serious storyline and every part of the film is vital and there attention can't be taken away. The teen movie doesn't have a unique logo as it's not seemed serious enough unlike the youth Drama . The subject of the youth drama is not clear unlike The High School Drama which we can tell is a female this  is also shown through the female color scheme of the text .

Easy A analysis

Easy A
Cam:
"easya" is a story title sequence as it goes straight into the film and begins by having a shot of the delightful brilliant sky and tilts its route down to the road with a building shot of the spot. There are then a lot of people close up shots of a few items like a street sign and the american banner and a few soil grown foods to give the audience a thought of what the spot is similar to. It then demonstrated a nearby up of the secondary school's name, "Ojei North High School, a California Distinguished School". The scene changed to the school's entrance by utilizing a tilting movement from a closer up tree and tilting downwards to demonstrate the school yard and students. The cam was following the titles that where coordinated with the moving pictures however in the meantime demonstrating to us the different social groups as it utilized moderate motion whenever it demonstrates a group of students. This demonstrates that it is an ordinary secondary school film as the students are put into social groups.
Sound:
There was dialog all through the title sequence as the principle character was describing and she was additionally conversing with other individuals. Everyone talked in an American accent which demonstrates that it is an American base film and was situated in America, or California as the storyteller said. There was synchronous streaming music through the start of the title sequence where the students walk and converse with their friends. However the music halted when the pioneer of a young lady group found the principle character and made her drop her papers. The way that the music ceased fits superbly with the scenes as the content moment ended. A few parts of the talking was diegetic and a few parts were non-diegetic. For instance when the principle character was portraying, that was non diegetic yet when she was conversing with her friend, teacher and others it was diegetic. Other non-diegetic sounds would be the school chime which was additionally a foley sound.
Mise-en-scene:
The title sequence was situated just outside the school structures and the lighting utilized was unadulterated daylight. Dress characterizes a person in a secondary school show, for instance the fundamental character wore long dull attire to blend in with the swarm and attract no attention to herself where as the friend wore splendid short clothes which would infer that she is pretty yet may be a prostitute. The non-verbal communication additionally aides characterize a character on the grounds that the primary character's friend had her involved her hips which demonstrates that she's bossy, yet the principle character remained up straight with a few papers in her grasp. The props utilized was a notepad to relate it to class however there was additionally cigarettes included in the title sequence which the educator broke and said "it could prompt undesirable pregnancy" and others which demonstrates that there may be sexual exercises included.

At first there is a panning from the floor to a close up of Jims shoulders and head. thought out the whole title sequence there is a lot of short reverse shot between for example Kevin and his girlfriend in the chair and Jim and the TV. There is also a big number of wide shots, for example the nerds playing there instruments and the boys walking through school. The camera moves fluidly through the set and the arrives at a specific shot such as a mid shot or a wide shot

Editing
Throughout the whole title sequence there is a lot of shot reverse shots and a lot of match cuts to make the movie fluid so it makes it seem like it is real. To be honest there isnt a lot of editing apart from the complete basics, i believe this is due to the fact that it is an old film when film wasnt that big.

Sound
The sounds start with a bass guitar  based sound track suggesting something mysterious is going to happen, there is also an erotic women in the background that gives out digetic sounds because the voice is coming from the tv. However as soon as we are shown the title of the movie we hear another song that is sounds a lot more bright, this have a very big link to the storyline because it suggests that the boys are going to break some rule and get themselves into a lot of trouble. Other sounds do include dialogue and other digetic sounds such as walking and normal day to day sounds.

Mise en Scene
The Title is mainly based first firstly in Jim's bedroom, and in a high school. The lighting in the film is normal and because its based in a high school there is no lighting. The key props in the title sequence are the sock that Jim uses and the remote that he struggles to turn off the TV. In the next scene the key props are the university papers that Kevin looks at to tell his girlfriend if she got into university. Those are the key props in the title sequence.

9 Extension Task, who makes title sequences?

A title sequence is the method by which films or television programs present their title, key production and cast members, or both, utilizing conceptual visuals and sound.[1] It usually follows but should not be confused with the opening credits, which are generally nothing more than a series of superimposed text.

Billy Hanshaw. With over 27 years of experience as an Expert 2D/3D Graphic Designer, Animator and Illustrator , who designed The Doctor Who 2014 title sequence.

His Ideas and inspiration came from 'I’ve heard the comment that the use of clockwork is wrong because it is too ‘human’ a way to represent time travel. My answer to that is that as far as I’m aware, humans make up the entirety of the viewing audience, and so will immediately understand the analogy. After all, a title sequence is meant to reflect the show’s core themes.'

His relationship with  writer and director Stephen Moffat is a good one as he was a fan of his work and approached him about the chance to work on it .

    Screenplay
    Directer

As you can see that mean girls a main stream production has a lot more credits than the independent film of My Brother the Devil, this is due to the fact that Mean girls had a lot more budget than the independent film so they could employ more people to make the film better. Mean Girls had the budget of $17 million which shows that they're a mainstream film that was funding by a conglomerate company.  So the differences are that the low budget film has less of a film crew than the more mainstream film of Mean Girls. It misses people such as costume designers and music supervisors and director of photographies. However some of the similarities are that they both have the core and compulsory people in the film crew, such as the directors, producers and writers.

    8. What is genre and what is a teen drama film?

Genre is A style or category of art, music, or literature

    A Teen Drama Film
The teen drama is a bona fide classic genre in 2013. At some point, everyone's had to deal with the trials and tribulations of adolescence. From the awkwardness of puberty, to the excitement and terror of falling in love--there's nothing quite like it  .They usually lead to the coming of age were the child will learn to mature and become a adult. They are usually set at party's, the streets , park , beaches etc .

    Categorizing Title Sequences

    1. Discrete title sequences - separately edited sequences that are apart from the film. It is like a mini film before the film, it helps to get the audience into the mood of the film.

    2. Narrative openings - the title sequence comes together with the narrative of the storyline. Example: 'The Shining'

    3. Credits over a blank screen - this the of title sequence simply consists of a blank screen and the credits coming up.

    4. Stylised editing - this is a heavily stylised film opening with amazing editing. Example: 'Mezrine'

Lessons learnt from Room for Romeo Brass

I learnt from this cover of Room For Romeo Brass

    1. Panning must be consistent as this can make the film look unprofessional and clumsy
    2. Mise En Scene must fit in with the context of the scene , as when we filmed in college , it was far from a shop  therefore  this gave a comical effect , which is not what we wanted .

3 . Transitions are very useful to make the film flow well ,  such  as cross  dissolve

    4. a Wide range of camera angles must be used but only when  necessary  such as doing a mid shot to display shot reverse shot

A Room For Romeo Brass Evaluation

    Camera -

This area was very well done as we showed a variety of match cuts such as when the child  entered  the gate and when the bag was handed by the man into the shop. A wide shot were very well taken during with scene where they are sitting on the bench and at the start of the scene . Mid -Shots were also crucial here during the part where they are ordering food.

    Camera  improvements-
The panning speed wasn't always consistent this made the title sequence look unprofessional

    Sound

We required extra diegetic sound such as
Bird Tweeting ,Paper Rustling ,Crunches as he steps n the dirt
This will be required by looking for the sounds in the sound effects.  The soundtrack was found On youtube , it was converted by clip grab and will be applied to the clip later  .

Sound improvements - Perhaps we could of used a boom stick to get better sound quality .

    Editing

Editing was done using Final Cut Pro .This was  consisted of us  organizing  the clips correctly and creating match - cuts . This also allowed us to add the titles and music so this was vital in our production

Editing  Improvements  - we could of made the shots flow better using Transitions , this would have made it look less jumpy .

    Mise En Scene

The areas we used for the filming were the college, Holloway Road and the park across the road of the college. We used a HD camera, a tripod and a  figring for the filming.  We didn't film this in chronological order of the scenes in the film, we did all the outside scenes without the bag first, then we did all the outside scenes with the bags and chips and then we filmed all the in college scenes.

This was due to not having the time to organize any real arrangements as this was just a trial , to give more filming  experiences

Filming a Room for Romeo Brass title sequence

We had the choice out of filming The Breakfast club title sequence, which is a a High school drama, but we chose the other option, which was A Room For Romeo Brass due to the lack of actors we had.   Also we chose this teen drama, because it was easier and also we didn't have sufficient funds for props also most of the filming was outdoors so we had the space to do it.  The areas we used for the filming were the college, Holloway Road and the park across the road of the college. We used a HD camera, a tripod and a  figring for the filming.  We didn't film this in chronological order of the scenes in the film, we did all the outside scenes without the bag first, then we did all the outside scenes with the bags and chips and then we filmed all the in college scenes.  once filming we went up stairs to the class and start editing.
