Reflection on the first 2 days of filming

On the first day of filming which was the central London filming time we will have to film the time-lapse again because of the interruptions we received by the general public. However the shots of Loic looking up to the lights were great. On the 2nd filming day I'm afraid we have to film everything again due to a foolish mistake of having the filter on our camera. So we will have to make extra days for us to re-film and continue filming for this project.

The Pitch No.1

Props

For the props we are going to have:

a beer bottle to show influence the fact the dad is an alcoholic.
a belt to portray the fact the dad abuses his son

and a bottle of water to make the jump cut to the dad holding the bottle

Day 2 of Filming

Day 2 of filming, much different to the first day due to the fact it was entirely in door filming.  We managed to film the beginning of our title sequence at Beth's house due to her having a spare boys room where we could film for the indoor scenes.  However we feel that we need to re-do the indoor filming, firstly because the camera might have been on filter, secondly we didn't get all the shots due to the lack of time and finally because we weren't fully prepared for the filming. But however if the footage is good, we will keep it to save time and use that time for the editing of the title sequence.

Day1 of Filming

Day 1 of filming was a long day of filming, due to the various locations we filmed in, such as Piccadilly Circus, Piccadilly market and Trafalgar square where we made our time lapse.  We managed to create the time-lapse for our title sequence by Loic having to sit in Trafalgar square for roughly half an hour ant around 4:30, so we could get a time-lapse of it going from light to dark to represent the essence of time going by.  Although the footage we caught for the time lapse might have been successful, we were interrupted twice during the filming of it due to two strangers acting up and ruining the footage.  However we did manage to get good footage in Piccadilly, where we managed to get footage of Loic looking up at the lights at different angles which can help show a sense of hope or admiration. Finally due to Serge's connections with the people who work in Piccadilly market we got permission to film in there for the final part of our title sequence, where we got Loic to walk in there at night and find a bench to sleep on.

According to Teacher Dan Lowe, I'm cure tly working at a +C/-B. This due to our group work and my contribution to that being rather strong , although my individual posts lack the same level of response. Also I think integrating different form of technological responses and blog posts could be useful and I could benefit from this .

Feedback to Storyboard

He decided  to scrape shots such as the dad opening the door and looking into the room , this was due to the  confusion  this would cause and this may be giving too much  information  out just for a title  sequence   .

We also decided to scrap the idea of Loic sitting in the  Allotment  with a fire pit , as we thought this would make the title  sequence   ridiculously  long , and setting this up maybe hard to control and if this  wasn't  maintained well the fire pit could actually cause harm to Loic .

We also scrapped the scenes on London Bridge and used a Bridge near Hackey Marshes . This was due to not being given permission to film on the bridge and no wanting to be fined. Also this shows the transition from Rural to Urban better , it also allowed us to gain some really good Birds Eye View shots of Loic.

We changed the timing of the time lapse , as filling from 4:30-5 pm  would give us a better sense , of how long he has been sitting there as it shows the transition from light to dark very well.

We had a suspended time video of  Trafalgar  square this allows us to have a sense that life is still going on and how everyone is rushing past this one person who is homeless without a care , this is similar to a Time Lapse

Feedback Revision from Pitch

In the Pitch we was informed on some good  arguments  to our ideas . This lead us to making a few changes . As we first planned to film on London Bridge , we was told that this may not be allowed as we may be classified as a camera crew this lead us to scraping this idea to avoid being fined and causing trouble.

Another issue we was presented with is the fact that  Trafalgar  Square would be busy on a morning , so filming there would be difficult. This was a decent point so due to this we made a decision to film in the afternoon session and this also allowed us to film  , the shots we wanted of  Piccadilly  straight after .

We was also asked if we had permission to film in picadilly market , in light of this we made a phone call not long after the pitch and this was proven to be fine , due to conncetions we had .

initial ideas

We will create a youth drama , as this allows to be more  adventurous  with the  different  types of shots and edits we use . The  initial  plot line is going to be about a Teenager who is abused at home and once it gets too unbearable he runs away from home .This Storyline allows us to gain many  different  shots in  different   locations  such as  Piccadilly  Circus , for editing it allows us to create a fast based and easy flowing title  sequence  .

This  character  is  abused  and therefore has no social group although you could state a binary  opposition  is created through his  relationship  with the abusive father .This will be  conveyed  through music and shot types such as a time lapse whilst he is sitting on the ground to gain a more  sympathetic  look on the matter .

Institutions

An institution is an organization or company, publically or privately owned that produces/ or distributes media products.
All the images below, are examples of institutions that would produce our independent youth drama produces and/or distributes films.  This is because they have distributed/produced many other youth dramas, such as Kidulthood, Adulthood, Shank and Sket.

15. Analysing a Youth Drama

'Dirty Deeds' is a high school movie, released in 2005, starring Milo Ventimiglia and Lacy Sherbert (Who had a main role in the popular culture teen film 'Mean Girls'). Its plot line is based around a set of tasks students at an American high school try to achieve within 24 hours to gain social status. The main character tries to complete this task in order to gain the attention of her crush, a stereotypical jock.
SOUND
The music used in the title sequence is classified as 'Punk Rock.' This is because it uses heavy, crashing drums accompanied by an aggressive lead vocalist who is shouting lyrics about rebellion over the track. This works well for a title sequence featuring a high school movie as its message regarding conformity and 'breaking free' from the rules of society resonate with many teenagers as most people of this age bracket are trying to resist conventions in order to gain attention, freedom or popularity. Usually music classified as 'punk rock' is seen as care-free and would not be used in a youth drama as it features an ignorant characteristic that many youth dramas would not focus on. Therefore I think that the soundtrack in this opening is relevant to the rest of the movie, and sets the rebellious tone that the plot line of 'completing dirty deeds' suggests.
CAMERA
For the entire duration of the title sequence, the camera is positioned at a dutch tilt. By having the camera at this angle this helps portray a disorientated, frantic approach to the images. Once again, this conforms to the idea that teenagers want to break free from the structure and formality of eveyr day life, and by using a slanted angle, we are immediately seeing things from literally a 'different angle.' reinforcing that this movie is centred around a teenage character base.
EDITING
One of the most prominent aspects of editing in this title sequence is the special effects. A dark opaque layer is added around the clip, so you appear to be looking in on something private. By having this element of privacy or secrecy, this suggests that this film is based on something the characters are not 'allowed' to do. Similar to the camera angles and sound used, this will establish this movie's theme as 'breaking away from conventions.' Furthermore, by narrowing down the visibility of the clip (darkened edges) this increases the intensity of the focal point, you force the viewer to watch exactly what you want them to. This is useful for a teen movie as it allows the main target audience (teens aged 13-18) to concentrate on important elements established in the opening so that they can fully understand the concept of the film, thus not confusing the audience.

30. Locations

29. Planning: Sound

Teen drama films generally have sombré tones to their soundtrack, as this aligns to the conventions of a teen drama being dark. To conform to this mood, We decided to research sounds and loops on 'GarageBand' that would help add to the atmosphere of our piece.

I selected 'Moods' within Loops on GarageBand, and selected the category 'Arrhythmic' and then 'Cinematic.' By selecting this theme, I had access to long loops of music with slow introductions and a use of string instruments to create a intense and dramatic atmosphere.

We will creating the sound tracks in Garageband which will be mostly moody and dark sounds with included sound effects that we will be also adding to the title sequence, we will be embedding the sound tracks that we make on Final Cut Pro.

27 Garage Band intro, 10 Things I Hate About

This Upbeat music represents what youth stands for such as fun and being young which the ' groovin' theme gives across through and this agrees with the concepts of teen dramas .

20 Xmas Homework title sequence analysis

The name of the film is The Inbetweeners , it is a youth drama . The list of title credits goes Film4 , Young Brawk production , actors and the the title of the film . This title sequence is a one with  moving image as it visits all of the main characters through London . The producer was  Christopher Young through  film 4 . The Plot follows 4 teenager males , who have just finished there A-Levels and would like to go on Holiday together to escape the pressures they have at home .The main characters in the film are Neil , Simon , Jay and Will . Teenagers are the main social group that we encounter and they seem to follow all the negative connotations about getting drunk and partying .However Teenagers react rather co-operatively with adults as the adults are presented as parents . The Camera use many mid- shots like when Jay is on the bed and when Will is speaking to his father. However when Neil is in the butchers we get a long shot . There any many camera shots used to create the intimate effect of Simon with his girlfriend . Editing included a lot of shot reverse shot used for all the main characters minus Neil , The title and credits are also edits used obviously . We hear a soundtrack and Will voiceover this sound is non-digetic , there is a lot of dialogue which is diegetic . The Mise En Scene was used to set the scene we knew Neil was  a Butcher, due to his clothing and the location of the store . Also this sets the tone of London very well using well known props and monuments to illustrate this.

    22. Initial ideas

We decided to do a teen drama because
our main idea is about a teenager running away from home, they get abused by their parents for being gay. Their will also be flashback of the persons past about how they were beaten by there parents. The scenes will be place in Central London, while the student is walking through Oxford St and Piccadilly Circus.

    The characters will be:
    • The main character, runaway (protagonist)
    • The parent(s) (antagonists)
    • Strangers
    Social groups;
    Teenager vs Parents

    Subgenre; Youth Drama

    20 XMAS Homework

    Name of film?
    Inbetweeners 1

    Subgenre
    Youth Drama

    List title credits:

    Film4
    Young Brawk production
    Actors
    Title of the film

What type of title sequence is this?
This is a moving image title sequence because it moves through the air, to London and to Jay's room.

Who is the producer of the film?
This is a mainstream film4 film, and the producer of the film is Christopher Young.

What's the plot of the film?
The plot of the film is that 4 teenage boys just finished college education and they go to Greece for a massive lads holiday. However there is little introduced in the opening title sequence because it is Simon Bird narrating over giving us a back story about his family life.

Who are the main characters in the title sequence?
The 2 main characters that we see is Simon Bird as Will and Jay as James Buckley
The experiences we see them encounter is the conflict of friendship and when Jay and Simon have a fight and a couple of days later they reunite again and regain there friendship. They also encounter the problems of having a bad hotel and generally the character encounter one problem and another most of the time. At the end of the film the characters realise how much there friends matter to them and they show that by cheering them on and drinking and partying together.

What are the social groups that are introduced?

    • Teenagers
    • Adults
There are stereotypes of the teenagers in the film and the stereotype is that the teenagers will get very drunk and party a lot, however the stereotype doesn't really change but we can clearly see that the teenagers matured and found their priorities.

How do the teens interact with the adults?
The teenager interact really well with the adults and this is because most of the adults we see is the parents of the main characters, however in tradition teen movies we expect the teens to act very rebelliously to adults however that doesn't happen in this film.

    Camera:
Most of the camera work is the mid shot of the characters in the film, especially when Will and his dad are talking, and also when Jay is naked. The camera is also a moving camera especially when the title credits come up and it looks like the camera is travelling through the air to the characters. They also use a panning effect with the camera.

    Editing:
The editing that is used is a very basic sort of editing, they use a lot of shot reverse shots. There is also of course title editing and the credits that appear on the screen for us to the name of the film and the actors.

    Sound:
The soundtrack that we first hear is 'Gimme Love' by 'The Vines' and it starts off really loud during the title credits and it slowly fades out and it completely does when we get to Jays room, that is the diegetic sound that comes in the title sequence, another non diegetic sound is the voice overs we hear by Simon Bird. The non diegetic sounds that we hear is the voices and and the natural sounds that are caught by the camera and not the sound that is made in post production. We hear the computer trying to close and the sound of Jay putting the glove on his hand.

    Mise en Scene:
The colour techniques do change gradually because in the start the lighting is still bright but as soon as they go on holiday the lighting does even brighter suggesting that the main part of the film is going to happen right now. The lighting of the film while the guys are on holiday is suggesting that the holiday is one massive party.
    The main setting of the film are;

    • London because that is there home and where they live
    • The hotel they're staying at.
    • The party house where they go back too to resolve the problems.
    • The boat where the film ends and the decision Simon makes to swim back to shore for his new girlfriend.
What are the main props of the film?
    • computers
    • clothes
    • the rape alarm
    • Alcohol
    • The boat
    • The coach that drive the guys to the hotel
Why do i like this film?
This film is very entertaining especially when they lurch from one problem to another and how they figure out how to solve the problem or deal with it. It is very relatable to me because I am the target audience for this film because i am myself a teenager. I also like the film because of the Tv series of the Inbetweeners which is also very entertaining in itself. This is a good example of a teen movie because it shows how teenagers grow up and become mature which also links to "coming of age".

    13. Sub Genre Conventions for Teen Drama

    Conventions of a Teen Drama

    Plots, Characters and social groups

Many teen dramas follow conventions based on teenage life, which are normally affected by social settings such as school or home, as well as issues such as peer pressure, romance or problems with 'coming of age.'
Cliques form the popular teen film 'Mean girls'
    Social Groups or 'Cliques'
Cliques refers to a group of individuals who are labelled by their social status. This can be influenced by popularity, hobbies and interests.

Common conventions of teen drama Cliques:

    • Jocks/Cheerleaders
    • Geeks/Nerds
    • Loners
    • Stoners
    • Popular
    • Artistic
    • People who don't fit a clique (Who are usually the protagonists of the film)
    Stereotypes
Different cliques are often stereotyped and expected to behave, act and dress in a particular way. Some common stereotypes are:
    Geeks
Often wearing thick layered miss matched clothing, with large glasses and/or braces, with no attention to their personal appearance. Often really clever, carrying large amounts of books and are often incapable of talking to the opposite sex.
    Cheerleaders
Often skinny young females dressed in a short skirted tight cheerleaders outfits. Generally with blonde hair, portrayed as dumb and obsessed with their appearance and social status. They have large groups of friends and are often admired by all. They are usually seen to be flirty with the opposite sex, and often date a popular 'jock.'
    Jocks
Males with an interest in sport (usually American Football). Broad, muscular, and stereotypically manly with interest in food, sport and women. They are often portrayed as stupid and mean to those of a lower social standing.
    Outsider
Often alone, with unusual style that allows them to unintentionally stand out from a crowd. Outsiders are likely to wear band logos of old or unknown bands, and will often have habits that don't conform to that of the other more popular groups. They may have a few friends, although are viewed by other teens as the 'losers' who cannot fit into 'typical school life.'

    Plot Lines

    Peer Pressure
Many  issues raised in films involve a pressure. A pressure to fit into a crowd or make friends. Or to do something they may not feel comfortable with because friends are doing it, such as smoking, drinking, drugs or sex. The character must decide whether to cave into the pressure and do something they do not want to do, and must deal with the consequences of their actions.

    Conformity
This is normally about defying the stereotypes of their social class. For example a jock who wants to join a choir or become a mathematician, or a geek who wants to join the sports team or has a crush on a popular cheerleader. This plotline often follows acceptance and challenges social status. A good example of conformity is 'She's the Man' where the main character wants to play football so has to dress as a boy to get into a reputable team.

    Outcast
Follows someone who has not managed to form a social group and feels excluded from society. An example of this would be the teen drama 'Awkward' where the main character does not make friends and has to move schools to try and make a fresh start.

    12. Order of titles

    11

Lots of teen dramas usually have similar structure and events that occur in them. But however they are also put into very different and contrasting sub-categories.

Comedy - You can usually relate to it, due to it having many issues or events that happens in everyday teenage life, such as social lives or relationships. An example for this, is The Inbetweeners.

Sci-Fi - Usually set in the future , with very futuristic surroundings, and also usually involves technology and machines.  An example for this is Star-Crossed

Fantasy - It usually has a supernatural element like vampires or  werewolf's, which is usually to do with having links to being supernatural, but having to hide it from the normal world.  An example of this, is Vampire Diaries

Action - It is often about good against evil, with elements of violence and also sometime it has elements of romance. An example of this is Smallville

    11. Teen Drama Sub-Genres

Even though many teen dramas follow the general stucture of young actors, middle class in a school environment, some teen dramas can also be sub-categorized into genres such as:

    Science Fiction
    - Futuristic settings, sciene and technology
(such as RoswellKyle XY and Star-Crossed)

    Action/Adventure
    - An exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger
    (such as Smallville)

    Fantasy
    - uses magic and other supernatural phenomena as a primary plot element.
(such as Buffy the Vampire SlayerTeen Wolf and The Vampire Diaries)

    Mystery
focuses on the efforts of the detectiveprivate investigator or amateur sleuth to solve the mysterious circumstances of a crime by means of clues, investigation, and clever deduction.
(such as Veronica Mars and Pretty Little Liars).

    7. My favourite Film Analysis

One of my favourite films is Toy Story, a Walt Disney production screened globally in 1995.

    Title Sequence

This title sequence is title over moving image, as the text is placed over the opening of the film. During the beginning of the title sequence, the young boy and toy figures are introduced, establishing the main characters of the film. The young boy is playing with the toys, suggesting that this film is centred around young kids, which suggests that this film is targeted towards a young audience. The first title used is the owner Walt Disney, which is synced with friendly positive music with the lyrics 'you got a friend in me' which suggests that this movie is about the relationship between the boy and his toys, allowing the audience to foreshadow that plot line of the movie.

    Structure:
1 minute 30 clip to introduce the film
